My sister and I were strolling around a department store, seeking the perfect dress for her much anticipated homecoming dance. We rummaged through heaps of multi-colored frocks and cocktail gowns. Too short. Too long. Too skimpy. The rejections gave us little hope. We gave another blasé stare when I caught sight of a black lacy number with a unique embroidered neckline buried in the debris of average tees and jeans. Out of sheer desperation, my sister plunged into the fitting rooms. Out she came, with a twinkle in her eyes. The Little Black Dress was a success, as it has always been in the past decades.

Originating from the designs of the iconic Coco Chanel, the Little Black Dress (dubbed LBD) has been a signature style for over eight decades. How has this simple dress remained the avant-garde of fashion throughout the long years? The answer lies in its versatility.

You can wear it to a high-profile cocktail party, to a cozy family gathering, or perhaps to a casual day of shopping. It never looks out of place!

This love-affair with the little black dress began in 1926, when Ms. Chanel published an unembellished black dress in Vogue magazine. Women all over the world were captivated by its simplicity and rushed to acquire this piece of elegance into their wardrobe. Earlier it was the privilege of the rich who owned it as a sartorial statement. However, during the Great Depression the color and the shortness of the dress reflected the somber mood of the times, and swung into being a cultural favorite.

Though the LBD remained largely monochromatic, the decoration and the cut were altered significantly over the next few years. New designs erupted in the 1950s when women gained feministic values, resulting in a wave of fresh looks such as the belted, the boat necked, and the lace-edged dresses. In 1961, when Audrey Hepburn was seen in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, wearing a hip-hugging LBD, accessorized with vintage pearls, she became a symbol of stunning beauty to women worldwide. By the late 80s, many women wore leather Little Black Dresses, emitting a “dangerous” vibe while others sported ruffled peplum dresses. These styles have been seen reminisced in today’s world of fashion.

Most people have a variety of shoes in their closet, including sandals, sneakers, casual and dress shoes. No matter what taste in shoes a person may have, the one color you can find in just about every closet is a black shoe.

One of the things that make black shoes so popular is that they compliment just about every outfit. They can transition from jeans to an evening gown or casual slacks to a tuxedo. Most men can get away with owning one or two pairs, because they usually wear business suits or casual apparel that will go with a basic black loafer. Women on the other hand wear a variety of clothes, so they may have different types of sandals, such as ones with flat heels or strappy ones with high heels. They also have a variety of pumps, boots and casual black shoes, so they are prepared for any type of occasion. Many women’s shoe stores offer fancy clips for shoes in rhinestone or other gem types. These clips can change a casual black pump to an elegant shoe worthy of a cocktail party. These clips make great accessories, because a woman can now dress up a comfortable casual shoe and look great without giving up their comfort.

Another great benefit to having black shoes is that they are less likely to show wear like scuff marks, or dirt and scratches. If you scuff them while on your way to go dancing, no one has to be the wiser. This is not the case when wearing shoes of a lighter color.

Athletes are now favoring black sports shoes for the same reason. It’s rare to see the white sneakers of the old days that started off looking clean and were soiled by the end of a sports match. Black sports shoes can look as good as they did when they arrived at the event, when it’s time for the athlete to go home. You will now see them adorning the feet of many baseball and soccer players for this very reason.

Black shoes that do get scuffed or dusty are easily cleaned with a damp cloth and can regain their luster by using a good black shoe polish. This adds to their appeal because lighter colored shoes may not clean as well. You can get black shoe polish that has a “scuff” remover ingredient that make your damaged shoes look like new again. This means the shoes will be wearable for a longer period of time than their lighter cousins.

We know how hard it is to say goodbye to our favourite dresses in summer, but really do we have to? Black is definitely the new black and for very good reason, take it from Audrey Hepburn. Do not get me wrong, a splash of colour here and there is very welcome. Give me a bright pink flower corsage any day, pinned to this seasons (black) blazer, of course but really rainbow hues are not really ever in fashion. Black is definitely a safe best, so if you are feeling less Olivia Palermo and more Olivia Newton-John, it is probably best to step away from that Hawaiian-print maxi dress and opt for a more easy-on-the-eyes ensemble.

Well for Summer 2010 all black outfits seem to have captured everyone’s attention as they are elegant and manage to create a certain mysterious and seductive look that suits women of all ages, sizes and walks of life. Black is timeless, ageless and suits all occasions, what event can you not wear black for? Fashion designers demonstrated just how powerful the attraction surrounding all black outfits is, so try to ensure you have a few little black dresses. So go for LBDs in pencils, a-lines, prom, balloon and cocoon style. If you are feeling a little round opt for empire cuts that are loose and flowing. Make sure that you choose a style that best suits your personality and body type and really you can never have a style mishap. Another style favourite is the black cotton shirt its always going to go with other finds and is easy for the busy career girl.

A girl must always have the perfect LBD in her wardrobe as it will always make you look elegant and glamorous. One can never go wrong with a little black dress. They add versatility to your wardrobe making it well worth the purchase. Black never fades, it always goes with the trends and you can mix and match it with anything. You can choose your perfect LBD to suit your size and shape. You do not have to be a skinny stick to wear one. More voluptuous girls can wear them too. The LBD is perfect for that slimming affect.

The great occasion gave a birth to a term: Art Deco, and inspired a new fashion – love for black. Decorators, jewelers and poster makers went black. Coco Chanel always lived in harmony with her time – she introduced her Little Black Dress.

Introduction of it in the world of fashion came at the time when the bright colors, prints and heavy embroideries dominated the fashion. The long-sleeved dress, which was initially made for day in wool, and for evening in crepe, satin or velvet, shook up the world of fashion. Later appeared the other variations: short, sleeveless, in a pleated black chiffon, in black lace…

The appearance of the new Chanel design provoked a lot of indignant protests by male journalists, who criticized the simplifying taste of Chanel for “no more bosom, no more stomach…” It inspired the famous remark of her competitor Paul Poiret: “What has Chanel invented? De luxe poverty.” However the success of this fashion innovation showed that men no longer could dictate how women should dress.

In 1926 American Vogue named Coco Chanel little dress “a Ford”, meaning it’s simplicity and it’s potential for an enormous and long-lasting success. With introduction of it the world of fashion entered the age of standardization, which proved to be irreversible. The fashion for black came soon up to the beaches with the design of black bathing suits.

Elegance usually implies expense an expensive couture gown, and expensive jewels. However, elegance can also be achieved on a budget. To start with, instead of diamonds, rhinestone jewelry can be worn. A small budget is needed if the elegance is achieved through wholesale rhinestone jewelry.

At the end of the Nineteenth Century and the beginning of the Twentieth, dressing up was a big production. Dresses were long and complex, with, at various times, hoops, bustles, lace and embroidery, mutton leg sleeves, and other bulky decorations. In the 1920s, 1926 to be exact, a change occurred. Coco Chanel invented the quintessential dress-up dress: the little black dress. Starting around this time, women began to rebel against the confining clothing that they had worn throughout history. They began wearing simpler, shorter, more comfortable dresses. At this time, Coco Chanel designed a soft jersey dress that was sleeveless, had a wide neck, and ended just above the knee. Up to this time, women had never exposed this much of the arms, shoulders, neck, and legs. Another shock was the color of the dress. Until this time, black was reserved for mourning and funerals. So, in 1926, the “little black dress” was born. And, while it has gone through many redesigns over the last 80 years, the original design is still as fresh today as it was then.

The beauty of the little black dress is its versatility. We started out discussing dressing up with elegance. Nothing is more elegant than a simply accessorized little black dress. For the woman of means, a few well-placed diamonds turn it into a head-turning ensemble. For the rest of us, rhinestones serve the same purpose. Rhinestones can be of a range of quality. At the high end are Austrian crystals. These stones, while much less expensive than diamonds, are not inexpensive. They have an extraordinary trait of catching and flashing the light. The next more reasonably priced rhinestones are made of glass with metal powder painted onto the back so that they can reflect light. The very least expensive rhinestones are made of acrylic. You may not want to wear acrylic diamonds with your little black dress, because, after all, acrylic is merely plastic. When you dress up your little black dress with rhinestone jewelry, the old saying that “less is more” is applicable. One or two small pieces will dress up the outfit. More than this will make it look like a child’s dress-up outfit.

However, the true beauty of the little black dress is not that it can be dressed up for an elegant evening but that it can also be dressed down for almost any other occasion. For a more casual cocktail party, leave off the diamonds or rhinestones and wear pearls. If you prefer not to wear jewelry, a fabulous scarf or colorful belt will dress up the dress in an even more casual way. Another way to accessorize the little black dress is with a jacket. This jacket can be black for a monochromatic look or a bright or pastel color.

There are two kinds of brides. The one that goes for traditional bridesmaids gifts and doesn’t put much thought into it. And, the brides that focus on gifts that are extra special and really reflect the bridesmaids tastes. If you are a bride who wants to really think about her bridesmaids and what they would like then consider buying them black bridesmaids’ dresses!

This really is an amazing gift because not only will your bridesmaids look stylish on your big day, but you can find black dresses at amazing prices. This will allow you to save your bridesmaids an awful lot of money as far as bridesmaids dresses are concerned and you will also be able to give really cool bridesmaids gifts that are within your budget.

One of the best things to do is to go shopping at one of the discount stores that carry name brand clothing. Allow each bridesmaid to choose their favorite black dress and then let them try it on. Most of these stores have dresses priced at $40 and under so you don’t even have to tell your bridesmaids a price range if you don’t want to. You can just allow them to try on dresses until they find the right one for their body shape and your big day. Sure, you should have some input because you want all of the dresses to complement one another and since theses dresses are your bridesmaids gifts you do get to have the final say. But, also keep in mind how the dress fits the bridesmaid and consider how likely she will be to wear the dress after the wedding.

That is perhaps the biggest reason to use black bridesmaids dresses, besides the fact that flowers of any color will look good. Women always have the need for a nice black dress and if they receive a beautiful one as bridesmaid gifts for your wedding then not only do they have the dress for your wedding but likely to attend other weddings and functions, too.

The idea of giving the bridesmaids their dresses as a gift has long been popular. However, most brides can’t afford to spend $100 or more on all of their bridesmaids gifts and this tradition is not as popular anymore. But, if the bride chooses a method like the one discussed above it is easy to not only find the right bridesmaids’ dresses that look good on each woman but that are also useful after the wedding and that serve as the perfect bridesmaids gifts.

Maybe you’ve traveled there on summer vacation and you loved the fashion scene. Here are the best prom dresses 2011 with European sensibility.

European Style vs. American Style

Europeans are much braver with fashion than Americans. For whatever reason, U.S. styles are a bit more traditional in length, color, and style. In France, Italy, England, and other hot spots in Europe, the girls have more freedom to express themselves through what they wear.

Styles from this area of the world will likely be shorter and more courageous. They will play with architecture and exotic prints. They will show more skin. And the lines of the tailoring will be very precise.

Styles that Give that European Flair

DG Designer style #1002P and 1002T are good examples. They are both the same outfit but in different colors. They are sweetheart cut mini dresses that use ruching and color blocking to give them a Roman vibe.

The color blocking is separated by rhinestone straps. They crisscross in the front and back creating geometric shapes that are filled with either light or dark ruched fabric. In #1002P, the fabric is lavender and eggplant. In #1002T, it is aqua and emerald.

DG Designer style #10113 is another example of what will be some of the best prom dresses 2011 in other countries. You will see ruching used again as a way to create allure. And it is also a mini dress.

This one comes in white and black, and it has a sheer scoop tank neckline. The sheer detailing is embroidered with jewels. If you look closely, you will see that the fabric ruching actually has a braided affect. This is also a very Roman inspired trend.

You really get a sense of how important elaborate architecture is in designs abroad in DG Designer style #1035. It comes in black and turquoise and right away you will notice more ruching. Ruching is used to exaggerate the wearer’s bust and hips for a more liberated look.

If you need another example, look for DG Designer style #1049B. You can really see the precision of style in this one. It is a two-tiered, off the shoulder mini. The top half is one color while the bottom half is black.

If you are excitedly preparing for your prom, probably all you are thinking about is what could be the fashion statement for prom dresses for 2010 . Surely you would not want to go to the most popular night of the year wearing an out-of-fashion prom dress. Of course everyone wants to shine, to get noticed, and to be competitive for the prom queen award. And knowing what is trendy this year will get you above it.

Maybe you have searched over the web, flipped a lot of magazine pages, gone through window shopping, asked for your best friend’s advice, or even consult a fashion designer on what is totally “in” this year. But now, let me summarize all that you’ve got so far and provide you with a simpler fashion guide for 2010 prom dresses . Here goes:

I. Style

The style of the prom dress is the first most important thing to consider so as to ensure you are on the right trend. The typical popular styles for dresses for prom this year are short fitted dresses, like those you have seen the stars are wearing at Hollywood. Mostly they are strapless if the length is up to the knee or they have sleeves if it is above the knee.

II. Design

The most fashionable designs for prom dresses this year are those accentuated with jewels, beads, sequence and glitters. All you need is to make your prom dress sparkle and shine and you are completely in. This will not only make your dress stand out but it will also add glow to your face. You may search for more design ideas with dresses online .

III. Color

The most favorable colors for 2010 prom dresses are those bright, loud and printed ones. Out with the sexy black for white is the new elegant. You can also choose dresses that are colored red, magenta, green, violet, and royal blue. A variety of colors in a dress is also popular such as those accented with floral, waves, checkered or geometric prints.

Every girl aspires to have a stunning entry for her much-awaited prom night by wearing an attractive, jaw-dropping prom dress. But there are instances in which dream remains dream due to improper selection of prom gown. Most of the prom dresses when they are hung on display appears to be dazzling but it is not necessary that it should be as dazzling when you put on as well. Discussed below in this article are some simple tips to choose the most perfect prom outfit that goes with your figure.

As the first, determine your body shape prior to the shopping or designing of your prom dress. For instance, if you have a pear shaped body with small top and large curved hips as well as booty, then it would be better to opt for a prom dress with styles like A-line, Empire, or Princess Dress. Likewise, if your body shape takes after an hour glass, it is obvious that you have a smaller waist with curvy shape around the hips as well as buttocks, and one of the best ways to highlight your curves is to wear prom dress styles including A-Line and dress princess. Further, wearing an A-line or Empire style prom will be most suitable for girls with apple shape, as its high waist will help to reduce their stomach area and lengthen the overall figure.

When choosing your prom dress, it is also important to take into consideration your unique requirements. For example, if you want to look cute and sexy with your petite figure during the prom night, try out wearing a bubble prom dress accented with flamboyant designs. If you are a tall thin girl who prefers to wear long sleeve prom gown but at the same time wants to look sexy in it, choose a press dress beautified with beaded long sleeves. Equally important for the right selection of prom dress is its color. It would be better if you choose a prom with not too jazzy or subtle color.

Once you have chosen one of your homecoming dresses to fit your body shape, the next step is to select appropriate accessories and footwear to complement your prom attire. Your accessories can be glittery however not too showy. Above all, don’t forget to try your prom dress, along with accessories and an elegant hair style, at least before a week of the prom night.
