We know how hard it is to say goodbye to our favourite dresses in summer, but really do we have to? Black is definitely the new black and for very good reason, take it from Audrey Hepburn. Do not get me wrong, a splash of colour here and there is very welcome. Give me a bright pink flower corsage any day, pinned to this seasons (black) blazer, of course but really rainbow hues are not really ever in fashion. Black is definitely a safe best, so if you are feeling less Olivia Palermo and more Olivia Newton-John, it is probably best to step away from that Hawaiian-print maxi dress and opt for a more easy-on-the-eyes ensemble.

Well for Summer 2010 all black outfits seem to have captured everyone’s attention as they are elegant and manage to create a certain mysterious and seductive look that suits women of all ages, sizes and walks of life. Black is timeless, ageless and suits all occasions, what event can you not wear black for? Fashion designers demonstrated just how powerful the attraction surrounding all black outfits is, so try to ensure you have a few little black dresses. So go for LBDs in pencils, a-lines, prom, balloon and cocoon style. If you are feeling a little round opt for empire cuts that are loose and flowing. Make sure that you choose a style that best suits your personality and body type and really you can never have a style mishap. Another style favourite is the black cotton shirt its always going to go with other finds and is easy for the busy career girl.

A girl must always have the perfect LBD in her wardrobe as it will always make you look elegant and glamorous. One can never go wrong with a little black dress. They add versatility to your wardrobe making it well worth the purchase. Black never fades, it always goes with the trends and you can mix and match it with anything. You can choose your perfect LBD to suit your size and shape. You do not have to be a skinny stick to wear one. More voluptuous girls can wear them too. The LBD is perfect for that slimming affect.

Tis the season to party, dress up and be merry. Having a flair in fashion does not have to be a woman thing these days. More and more men are keeping up with the women with their good taste, well-tailored pants and suits and understated but elegant styles. This Christmas season, especially that is winter, poses some challenges for men on their fashion choices. The following are some tips on how to create a man’s version of the versatile, cosmopolitan woman’s little black dress.

Choose a good sweater. Ditch the funny Santa themes or Rudolph the Reindeer designs. For you will surely generate a lot of comical remarks and laughter from your friends and colleagues. Instead, choose colorful cardigans, with classic designs but still maintaining the Christmas color schemes. For example, Joe Fresh’s fine stocking knitwear which costs about $39 has stylish collar edition of these classic knitwear for the winter season.

Get a great, but simple underneath shirt. Because layering is one of the most popular fashion options during the cold seasons, always begin with a classic white shirt underneath, nicely tailored and tucked in. It is important to have a good underneath shirt, so that when everything is peeled off inside a warm cottage house, you would still look neat and proper. It’s all about structure and tailoring. For example, Banana republic have some pretty good-looking striped Monogram shirt collection, with two-button cuffs at the end, and an appropriately sized collar. Their shirts cost about $155.

It is all about the layering. Layer your shirts with a v-neck t-shirts, and then be consistent by piling on with a contrasting sweater or suit. When choosing v-neck t-shirts or sweaters to layer, make sure that the buttons of the undershirt are displayed neatly. One needs to be consistent about the design and the color coordination of the layering pieces. Top it off with a classic tailored, and unbuttoned jacket and suit, and you are ready to go out and get the girls screaming for your new, decadent preppy look.

To truly understand what makes the little black dress so special and significant to fashion, you have to know its history. It is the most well known fashion icon of all time and got its start in 1926, when it was introduced to the world by fashion designer Coco Chanel.

The illustration for the simple sheath dress without collar or cuffs was published in Vogue magazine. Vogue rightly predicted that like the Ford Model T, the dress would become standard fair that women of every social class would want to own. Coco’s affordable little black colored dress instantly became a symbol of elegance and functional chic.

Throughout history, the little black dress has been worn by top celebrities and influential women. Maybe the most influential example is Audrey Hepburn in the film classic, “Breakfast At Tiffany’s.” Audrey wore a form fitting black strapless gown featuring a floor length design creating a cool sophisticated look that women everywhere wanted to emulate.

Marilyn Monroe is also well remember for wearing multiple variations of this kind of dress, often custom designed to best show off her hourglass figure. In the 1990s, the beloved Princess Diana wore a black pleated chiffon dress to a party while her husband announced his adultery on television and kept the iconic dress alive for a new generation to explore.

To choose a perfect little black gown for you, keep in mind timeless style is not about buttons, ribbons and excess. Remember the woman makes the clothes not the other way around! Go with a simple design and simply dress it up or down using for the occasion.

The all dresses in your closet should suit your body type. Thinner less curvy women might try a plunging neckline to enhance the bust line or can go with a strapless dress without worrying about being exposed. Women with curvier shapes might look for an empire waist to elongate their bodies and a length below the knees to add balance. Women without a defined waist line or lacking much shape can look to an empire waist to give them curves and make the bust appear fuller. Gap.com offers a variety of classic and trendy dress styles that go with any figure.

With a little black cocktail dress, women can play up their best feature. Show off long toned legs with a mini little black dress. A plunging back is daring and sexy for those with defined backs, expertly showing off a svelte figure. A V neck does wonders for women with fuller bust. Though lots of trendy lengths can be found the timeless classic hem hits at the knees or slightly above. The material also tells a lot about how functional a little black dress is. Though spandex and other stretch materials work well, a linen, wool, silk or cashmere black dress will work great for any social occasion, they also flatter the form.

The great occasion gave a birth to a term: Art Deco, and inspired a new fashion – love for black. Decorators, jewelers and poster makers went black. Coco Chanel always lived in harmony with her time – she introduced her Little Black Dress.

Introduction of it in the world of fashion came at the time when the bright colors, prints and heavy embroideries dominated the fashion. The long-sleeved dress, which was initially made for day in wool, and for evening in crepe, satin or velvet, shook up the world of fashion. Later appeared the other variations: short, sleeveless, in a pleated black chiffon, in black lace…

The appearance of the new Chanel design provoked a lot of indignant protests by male journalists, who criticized the simplifying taste of Chanel for “no more bosom, no more stomach…” It inspired the famous remark of her competitor Paul Poiret: “What has Chanel invented? De luxe poverty.” However the success of this fashion innovation showed that men no longer could dictate how women should dress.

In 1926 American Vogue named Coco Chanel little dress “a Ford”, meaning it’s simplicity and it’s potential for an enormous and long-lasting success. With introduction of it the world of fashion entered the age of standardization, which proved to be irreversible. The fashion for black came soon up to the beaches with the design of black bathing suits.

There’s probably one thing that all plus-size women and their wardrobes have in common. Should I let you guess? Yep, you’re right, it’s the predominance of black clothing. It’s funny. Somewhere along the way, we all seem to have bought into the idea that black is SLIMMING – and into the further idea that we needed to be “slimmed” by our clothing. An annoying concept for those of us who LIKE our curves. (And who see the irony in skinny women “enhancing” curves after starving to be slender.) Why can’t we all just get along???

But I didn’t start this article to write all that. I started this article to talk about my favorite topic: the plus size little black dress. There is one thing that we ALL need in our wardrobe, and that’s the perfect little black dress. Why? Because that one garment can take you from your daytime doldrums to your night-time fantasies within seconds – and almost as simply as if your fairy godmother showed up with a pair of glass slippers and a pumpkin carriage!

First of all, make sure that you HAVE a few little black dresses on hand, and make sure they’re stylish and in good condition. Sometimes we wear them so often, that they’ve simply lost their pizzazz. If you need one or two new ones, be BOLD and go for a shorter hem or a lower neckline. After all, you can always toss on a great long, dramatic silk scarf (tied at the back of your neck) to create a more appropriate look for the office. When you leave for the day, tie that same scarf sideways around your waste to add an attention-getting extra to your ensemble.

What else can you do to pump up the volume? Here’s 8 more tips to get the ball rolling.

Stockings. Remember that a simple little black dress can carry a bigger accessory statement. Go for fishnet pantyhose! … or at least consider a few polka dots or a classy seam up the back.

Shoes. Okay, this is your chance to give yourself a REAL lift. The great thing about a black basic is that you can add almost ANY signature color to your accessories. Just make sure that you create a symphony of color – and not chaos. If your shoes are red, your scarf should feature the same shade too. You get the picture.

Always wanted to make your own costume? Do you see yourself as slightly creative but sewing is not your thing, like to save a $1.00 or $2.00, then this is the article for you. We will discuss 5 ways to adapt that little black dress, simply, by using a hot glue gun. All it takes is a little spare time, imagination &
a sense of fun.

Don’t despair if you don’t own a black dress, you can always check out your local thrift or opportunity shop. Depending on the character chosen, look for a style which is simple and plain in design and sits either above the knee or ½ way up the thigh. We will describe in detail what style of dress is needed and keep in mind none are floor length.

You will have a gamut of characters to choose from for example; a Gangster girl, French maid, Flapper, Firefighter & Dracula’s vixen all of which you can wear to your next costume party.

Costume Idea 1: Gangster girls are generally known for their pinstripe ensembles, however here we will be using a sleeveless black dress and adding the accessories to complete the costume.

What you will need: black dress, black or white hat with contrasting band, short white tie, white beads, black fishnets, stilettos & tommy gun (optional).

Dress alterations: use either an A line or straight V neck dress (with sleeves or sleeveless is fine) and add a white collar (if you are handy, from an old shirt) or just keep the neckline as is.

Costume Idea 2: French maids are generally considered very feminine with their frilly dresses & high heeled stilettos.

What you will need: black dress, small frilly apron, lace headpiece, black fishnets, stilettos & feather duster (optional).

Dress alterations: use a V or round neck dress with sleeves, add gathered lace around neckline, sleeves and hemline by gluing or sewing.

Costume Idea 3: Charleston flappers were ladies from the 20s era, along with
Gangster’s moles who were known to titillate many of the mobsters by sometimes singing & flaunting their sex appeal in clubs and the like. Both wore similar style dresses adorned with tassels & accessorized with beads & boas.

How would it feel to design your own prom dress this year and develop your fashion skills? Remember, promenades these days are open to all unique possibilities. Prom dresses for 2010 are trendy looking with exceptional fashion that you would never even think of. So you can imagine, experiment a style, and go for a truly unique design.

Designing your own prom dress provides you a lot of benefits. First, since you know exactly what you want, you have the sole discretion over what style, design, color and fabric matches your personality. You have the grand opportunity to wear your very own dream dress because you design what you exactly prefer for yourself. You are sure then that you are totally comfortable of what you are wearing because “it’s so you!”

Second, designing your own prom dress will surely make you very artistic and inventive. It will unleash your creativity as your mind work on even the finest details. You will develop not only your fashion skills but also your drawing skills as you make a design of your own. Isn’t it amazing to wear a prom dress of your own creation? So let loose your wildest dress fantasies and boost your imagination for the most gorgeous dress ever.

And third, 2010 prom dresses should not be costly. You know, financial crisis is still up, and designing your own dress will give you a lot of savings. Instead of hiring a professional designer and pay him a grand after, why not design your own and spend the money on something else for the prom like a nice pair of shoes? You are then being practical and at the same time self reliant. Surely your mom will thank you.

So if you are ready to design your own prom dress for 2010, here are some tips to get you started:

1. Get ideas from the magazines or dresses online. They offer wide variety of styles and designs that can catch your attention.

2. Reach a sketchpad and draw the dress of your dream. Start with a silhouette sketches and allow your hands to get creative. Soon you can see imaginations on the paper.

3. Follow the trend of the season. Dresses for prom this year are into shining and sparkling effects. Shade it with bright colors and loud prints.

Long prom dresses exude an air of glamor and charm. They are traditional for teenage proms and make the girl look more like a young lady than just a school girl. Formal attire makes one feel and look exquisite and beautiful. A floor length prom dress can make your daughter look like the princess she always wanted to be when she was a little girl. If you or your daughter is a little shy about wearing a long dress that is sparse on the top make sure to look at ones that come up a little bit further on the back. Many floor length dresses are bare backed and the bottom of the back comes down to the waist, make sure you are comfortable with the amount of skin you are revealing and that it is in good taste. A elegant and sexy look does not require nudity (lol).

There are many that come further up on the back to allow the girl to wear a strapless bra. Look for those and then see if you can find a shrug or bolero made of a matching material to go over top. Another option is using a shawl over the shoulders. There are several designers that are designing floor length prom dresses for teenage girls that are keeping modesty in mind. Jovani makes prom dresses that have full skirts and the back does not come down too low while the neckline is not too revealing. They come in beautiful colors with pretty beads and baubles. Cassandra Stone has been a popular prom dress designer for years and makes a few modest designs.

Many of these designs might be a little too low for a teenager but they are all the rage. Do You Love Me dresses are the ones that will make your daughter look like a fairy princess and are very modest yet pretty. Tiffany Designs is another company that makes a variety of styles of long dresses that are suitable for younger girls.

This is just a sampling of designers as there are many from which to choose. Whatever you decide to do make sure you take your time look at a few options to make sure it is the very best for your tastes and budget. There are so many dresses to choose from sometime it can be daunting.

If you are a daughter of a janitor or a baker or you simply do not want to spend much on your prom dress, then I can be your fairy godmother to provide you the best dress at an amazingly affordable price. For teenager girls, prom is the most exciting time of the life but it can also cost you a lot if you do not spend wisely. I can help you look for affordable options for your prom so that you can save your money and still look as beautiful as you wish to.

Just when the date of the prom is announced, you should start shopping for your dress. Keep the limit of your budget in your mind as well as the kind of dress that flatters your figure and the color that complements your skin. Here are the shopping choices for affordable cocktail prom dresses:

Look for discount and clearance sale dresses at malls and local shops. Try to avail yourself of the season ending sale. Even if at that point you have no plans to buy the dress, just go in and try out a few so that you can know what suits you and what kind of dress you should look for in the future.

One important place to look for cost-effective dresses is online. You can find many online shops and stores that sell designers’ dresses at not more than $50.

Also browse auction sites where you can read the reviews of the products. Such sites even offer second hand dresses at extraordinarily low prices. However, when buying online you have to be very careful in understanding the fit, measurement and other features of the available dresses.

Other options for finding affordable cocktail dresses include places such as consignment shops, thrift stores, and garage sales.

Classified ads can also be an ultimate place to find the kind of dress you want. Most of the times, you are likely to come across a very new looking and trendy dress, which would not cost much.

If you know sewing, the last and the most affordable option left is to make your own dress.

prom dress

The style choices for the 2010 prom year are by now quite clear. There’s the classic Princess Gown; strapless, nipped in at the waist and A-line to the floor. The Slinky; really suits a hour glass figure hugging the body at the waist, gathering in around the knees and fanning out in a fish tail to the floor and the current favourite – the Short and Flirty; a take on the princess gown, but as the name suggests, way above the knee line!

So once you’ve selected your style – what about the colour? The obvious thing to say is that it all depends on your own hair and eye colour and Prom Night is not the time to abandon the fashion principles you’ve worked to all these years! If green was never your colour – it isn’t going to be now!! However, as with high street fashion, there are key trends you can work with

The catwalk colours last autumn divided into two camps. Firstly, a range of pastel colours which are particularly suited the Princess Gown style. Top marks here go to Fuchsia and Yellow which really made an impact. The pastel pallet allows the designers to go to town on the detailing with diamante and beading clearly evident on the corset part of the dress. Lacing at the back was also a favourite device

The second colour trend went in completely the opposite direction with dark, bold colours on offer. Midnight Blue and Purple where both crowd pleasers and manufacturers reported that they had sold more black prom dresses than ever before. Unusual, as young prom goers tend to option the lighter colours that suit a young complexion…

This darker colour trend may follow in the wake of the more sophisticated and overtly sexy styles that have seen around for the past couple of years as finally the prom dress moves out of its heritage ‘bridesmaid’ zone and joins the ranks of the ‘red carpet’ for 2010

For the more adventurous prom goer there are choices outside of the classic block colours. A number of designers have introduced pattern and floral fabrics as bold alternatives. Typically the style of gown used to show these designs to best advantage is the floor length halter neck. There are some great black and white animal prints and bold geometrics. The florals use large images of flowers often set against stark white backgrounds. The advantage to these styles is that they are not classic prom and can easily be worn for other occasions be that a family summer wedding or dinner out with the man you met at your prom!
