We can thank fashion designer Coco Chanel, who popularised the little black dress (LBD) in the 1920s, for such a simple design that can suit any shape or size.

The idea was that black was a neutral colour that would suit anyone and it would be versatile and affordable for everyone.

No women’s wardrobe is thought to be complete without the staple black dress that can be dressed up or down depending on when it’s worn.

The iconic black dresses are plain and simple to fit in with the idea that they well always be fashionable and not appear dated.

The great thing is that you can buy a plain and simple black dress and also keep up with the changing trends buy buying black backless dresses, maxi styles, long, vintage or whatever the current trend.

It’s great for those of us that are a little reserved at wearing bright bold colours. You can add subtle touches to your staple black dress with belts, shoes and accessories to keep up with the “in colour” of the season without feeling self conscious … not everyone can pull of a pink dress or other bold colours of the season.

Black is also a colour that will match well with any other colour. So you keep up with the seasons colour trends if you buy a dress with black and touches of another colour.

And it can be worn as business wear to casual wear to more glamorous evening wear, it really is a dress for all occasions.

We rummaged through heaps of multi-colored frocks and cocktail gowns. Too short. Too long. Too skimpy. The rejections gave us little hope. We gave another blasé stare when I caught sight of a black lacy number with a unique embroidered neckline buried in the debris of average tees and jeans. Out of sheer desperation, my sister plunged into the fitting rooms. Out she came, with a twinkle in her eyes. The Little Black Dress was a success, as it has always been in the past decades.

Originating from the designs of the iconic Coco Chanel, the Little Black Dress (dubbed LBD) has been a signature style for over eight decades. How has this simple dress remained the avant-garde of fashion throughout the long years? The answer lies in its versatility.

You can wear it to a high-profile cocktail party, to a cozy family gathering, or perhaps to a casual day of shopping. It never looks out of place!

This love-affair with the little black dress began in 1926, when Ms. Chanel published an unembellished black dress in Vogue magazine. Women all over the world were captivated by its simplicity and rushed to acquire this piece of elegance into their wardrobe. Earlier it was the privilege of the rich who owned it as a sartorial statement. However, during the Great Depression the color and the shortness of the dress reflected the somber mood of the times, and swung into being a cultural favorite.

Though the LBD remained largely monochromatic, the decoration and the cut were altered significantly over the next few years. New designs erupted in the 1950s when women gained feministic values, resulting in a wave of fresh looks such as the belted, the boat necked, and the lace-edged dresses. In 1961, when Audrey Hepburn was seen in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, wearing a hip-hugging LBD, accessorized with vintage pearls, she became a symbol of stunning beauty to women worldwide. By the late 80s, many women wore leather Little Black Dresses, emitting a “dangerous” vibe while others sported ruffled peplum dresses. These styles have been seen reminisced in today’s world of fashion.

It quickly became a “uniform for all women of taste,” as Vogue magazine predicted at the time.

Before the 1920s, the color black was only worn in periods of mourning. Women who wore black were considered indecent or sinful. After the first world war, as well as the outbreak of Spanish Influenza, it became common in France to see women wearing black for long periods of time, and the stigma lifted somewhat.

A part of the “anti-corset” generation, Chanel invented much of women’s style as we know it. She once described her work as “nothing more than transform[ing] men’s clothing into women’s jackets, haircuts, ties and cuffs.” She worked hard to create clothes both simple and sophisticated, even if they created scandal.

Women were drawn to the dress by its simplicity, elegance and cost. A few years later, the Great Depression forced many people to economize, which increased the popularity of the little black dress as a cheap way to look smart.

Coco Chanel. Nettie Rosenstein, a New York-based designer, popularized the dress in the United States. Though some claim she invented the dress before Chanel, the evidence is slim. Elsa Schiaparelli, Chanel’s rival, put her own fantastic twist on the LBD, by introducing a wrap-around version.

“Chanel’s Ford,” as the press then called it, had long sleeves. Subsequent decades have removed the sleeves and shortened the hemline. Perhaps the most famous little black dress was worn by Audrey Hepburn for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” not to mention the one worn by Betty Boop. Today, every style guide trumpets the dress as a wardrobe staple for all women.

A staple for every woman’s wardrobe, the little black dress is a classic item, and can be re-invented every now and then for a different look, simply by accessorizing. It never goes out of style and is very versatile.

Don’t be afraid to stock up on a few black dresses. They can last for many years, and every woman should have at least half a dozen black dresses of different lengths and styles – a strapless short cocktail dress, a spaghetti strapped long simple dress, a dress shirt, a top, a skirt………

A simple black dress can be very elegant and sexy at the same time. The key is in accessorizing.

1. A simple strapless cocktail dress can be worn in the office by simply putting on a blazer or a cardigan. Remove the blazer, and you have a dress that is suitable for an evening event. Accessorize with some gold or glittery jewelry to add a festive touch. Fancy stockings or pumps can also add some drama to the dress.

2. Try putting together a simple black top and a soft, flowing black skirt with a metallic gold or silver big band belt. This would readily add glamour to an otherwise basic set of top and skirt. I took my 60-year old mother on a Carribean cruise. She had nothing to wear for her formal night, and we pulled this trick together with a gold belt we purchased on the cruise ship.

3. Gold looks best with black. If you have to choose between gold or silver, choose gold. Gold bangles, gold earrings, gold chain necklaces will add a festive touch to your black outfit.

4. Pearls go well with black dresses. A long strand of pearl with a single knot or a three-stranded pearl choker can give you the Jackie Onassis look.

5. If you can afford only one gown, stick to a very simple long gown. Think Audrey Hepburn, think Breakfast at Tiffany. Black simply just wouldn’t go out of style. Forget about orange, fuschia, lime green, magenta…. These colors go in and out of fashion.

While many men find themselves drawn to black dress shirts, once they get them home they are never quite sure what to wear with them or what types of occasions these shirts are most suited for.

A Casual Look

One of the reasons men are drawn to black dress shirts is that black shirts no matter what style never seem to truly make it beyond the casual category. Unless you are the rare man that can make anything look stylish and formal it is best to avoid wearing that black shirt for job interviews and professional business meetings where the more formal business look is encouraged. That being said there are many occasions where a black dress shirt can make the perfect statement and even help you stand out and look smart.

Great Occasions to Wear a Black Dress Shirt

One occasion where a mens black dress suit can really stand out and make an impression is on a date where you want a dress casual look. Your date will be pleased that you took the trouble to wear a nice shirt, pants, and a tie for the occasion but did not go overboard. You can also wear a black dress shirt to the office if your dress policy is such that just dress shirts and pants are acceptable outfits. These shirts also go well at parties where you can either wear casual style slacks or jeans.

What Colors Go Well With a Black Dress Shirt

If you are going to wear a black dress shirt you are going to want to be extremely careful choosing what color of slacks and ties to go with this shirt. You are going to want to avoid wearing this shirt with a white suit unless you want to look to a movie hit man or someone who still disco dances. You also want to avoid a white tie and shoes as well. Most browns are also a pour choice to wear with your black suit as the two colors seem to class a bit and make you look a bit dull and boring. That being said here are some combination’s that look great with that black dress shirt.

Khaki pants in almost any shade except those tending to be more brown than tan will look great with your black shirt. Combine the pants with black shoes and belt.

Black tie weddings are always so elegant and sophisticated. If you are planning a black tie affair, not only does the bride need to find an appropriate gown, but so do her bridesmaids. These are some of the hottest trends for formal and fabulous bridesmaid dresses.

First of all, a formal bridesmaid dress can be just as chic and stylish as one for a more relaxed wedding. They are not the big poufy dresses that bridesmaids had to wear to evening weddings in the past. For a black tie wedding, your attendants should wear floor length dresses, but they can still be very current and sophisticated.

Other than length, color is going to be one of your biggest decisions to make about your bridesmaid dresses. The trend for formal gowns is to go with deep neutral colors. You hear a lot of colors names like pewter, charcoal, slate, chocolate, and even black. What you are not finding is very many bridesmaid dresses in light or bright colors for formal weddings. It is not to say that you can’t have a floor length apple green dress for your attendants if it is your heart’s desire, but they may stick out like a sore thumb amongst the tuxedos and guests in more subdued colors.

The styles of formal bridesmaid dresses these days are slim and chic – there is not a petticoat in sight! Two of the most popular fabrics are silk chiffon and tissue taffeta. The chiffon is a beautiful flowing fabric that will fall softly in a slim skirt. It is often being shown with a pleated or shirred bodice falling into a skirt that is slender, but lightly gathered at the waist. All of these fabric effects help to make the chiffon a more forgiving fabric than it is when used in a single layer or draped on the bias. Your bridesmaids will thank you for this!

Tissue taffeta is a fabric with a crisper hand than the chiffon, and it is also opaque, unlike the sheer chiffon. The tissue weight of taffeta is wonderful, because it retains some of the same crispness of regular taffeta, but its lighter weight allows it to be pleated and gathered without being bulky. It is a great choice for a bridesmaid dress when you want a gown that has a skirt which can hold a shape like a slim A-line. The taffeta would also be fantastic for a black tie wedding in the fall or winter, whereas the chiffon is best for warmer weather.

Corsages are an extra touch to make a special event or person even more memorable. They are worn by the mothers and grandmothers of the bride and groom to identify and honor their special role on the wedding day. Corsages for those very special occasions can add a beautiful touch to any brides dream day.

Wedding corsages are created from a single or small group of flowers and are worn by the female members of the wedding party. You can give little corsages as mementos of your special events and as baby shower favors. Baby shower corsages are wonderful keepsakes for the mommy-to-be.

If the bridal party plans to coordinate their clothing with the colors of the wedding, then make the corsages to match the other arrangements. The advantage of silk is that they can be kept forever, won’t give you hey-fever, and you will not have the embarrassment of your corsages wilting during the day.

Corsages can be designed using single or multiple flowers. Florists know how very important prom flowers are to their young customers and are happy to work with them to make their corsages and boutonnieres special.

Florist designed and hand delivered corsages, boutonnieres and wrist corsage are made with utmost care and quality flowers to make sure you look your best on your special day. Two popular styles are wrist corsages and small hand-held nosegays and they look great with strapless dresses. Wrist corsages can look very stylish with a short sleeve dress.

One of the most common prom flowers is the corsage. It is used in a special event to be worn on the body to signify a special person, person of importance or even for the host of the event. Whoever wears a corsage, it gives extra attraction to the person. In occasions like wedding reception, corsages are worn by the bride and groom to identify and honor their special role on the wedding day. It is often extended to the parent of the bride and groom.

Corsages can be designed with single or multiple flowers bundled together with some colorful ribbon. The color ribbon matched the color of the flower that added attraction to the person who wear it. In this modern society, people are very conscious in the design of their attire. Due to the design and cost of attire, design of corsages is more challenging to provide damaging of the attire when the corsage is pin on their attire. Secondly, for ladies who wear strap blouse, it is not practical to have a pin-on corsage.

A wrist corsage is another type of prom flowers specially made to be worn on the wrist of women. Most of the common reason to wear on the wrist is due to the fact that the women’s attire are not suitable to have a pin-on corsage. Also, there are some who choose purposely chosen the wrist corsage for its beauty and specialty. Florists know how very important prom flowers are to their young customers and had since innovated a new designed called the wrist corsage. There are also some who do want her expensive clothing to have a hold on it due to the pin corsage. The next time you get a chance, take a closer look at the corsage. Your will notice its beauty and appreciate it. On top of that, the color scheme of a wrist corsage can be customize to match. While the pin-on corsage color matches the shirt or jacket, the color scheme of a wrist corsage matches the skin color of the hand/wrist. Besides the color, the size of the corsage need to match the size of the hand/wrist to show uniformity.

A beautifully assembled corsage can enhance and add a special touch to the wedding attire. Corsages are traditionally offered to the mother and grandmother of the bride and groom and can be extended even to other female members of the bridal party.

What is a corsage?
A corsage is a small and dainty floral accessory, worn by a woman of the wedding party. It consists of a small bunch of flowers or flower buds interspersed with herbs and decorative leaves. A typical wedding corsage is created either from a single flower or a tiny cluster of flowers and is mostly pinned to the left corner of the dress.

Corsages are increasing in their popularity for one very simple reason – they allow the members of the wedding party a total hands-free experience to fully enjoy the big day.
History of corsages

The corsage has its origins in ancient Greek beliefs where young women getting married used to wear flowers and herbs, believing their strong fragrance would ward off evil spirits. Today, corsages are worn for the big prom night, for elaborate ceremonies and functions, and of course, for weddings.

Who wears a wedding corsage?

A corsage is generally worn by the women in the wedding party, more noticeably the respective mothers of the bride and the groom. They can be extended to include grandmothers as well. Corsages serve a dual purpose – as style accessories and to help guests identify the immediate family members of the bride and groom.

When it comes to corsages, the rule of thumb seems to be simple: match the corsage with the colour of the outfit.

Women’s corsages can be coordinated to match the boutonnieres worn by the men folk in the wedding party for those wishing to achieve a harmonious look.

What flowers are the favourite choices for wedding corsages?

Orchids dominate when it comes to wedding corsages, with lilies, carnations and roses coming a close second. A wrist corsage made with a pink rose transforms a wrist into a truly dainty and fairy-like vision.

Usually, the corsages worn by the mothers of the bride and groom are different from the ones worn by the rest of the wedding party. One of the most popular corsages for the mothers and grandmothers of the bride and groom is the magnolia.

The traditional way to wear a wedding corsage

Traditionally, the corsage has always been pinned on to the lapel of the dress or suit. Corsages made by professional florists are accompanied by a corsage pearl-headed pin. These days, even the traditional corsage pin has seen a makeover. Corsage magnets are now available as well, particularly suited for delicate dress materials which would be badly damaged by a pin.
